11.4What is lot size (in F&O)?

Time-sensitive: Nifty lot size 65 from the January 2026 series (NSE circular, October 2025). Lot sizes are revised periodically. Rules and rates change, so check the official source before acting.
1What is it?

The fixed number of units in one contract. You can only trade whole lots.

2Why does it exist?

SEBI requires index derivative contracts to have a minimum value (about ₹15 lakh at the time of introduction), so exchanges set and periodically revise lot sizes.

3Calculation
Contract value = Price × Lot size
  1. Nifty 25,000 × 65 = ₹16.25 lakh.
One Nifty lot controls about ₹16 lakh of exposure.
4Quick revision
  • Whole lots only.
  • Minimum contract value ≈ ₹15 lakh.
  • Revised periodically; check NSE.
