2.3NSE vs BSE: what is the difference?

1What is it?

Both are SEBI-regulated exchanges where you can buy the same big companies. The main differences are size, history and which index they run.

2Why does it exist?

Knowing the difference helps you choose where to place orders. For most investors in large companies the price is almost the same on both.

3Stock market example

At the same moment a stock might trade at, say, ₹1,400.10 on NSE and ₹1,400.25 on BSE (illustrative). Open the two HDFC Bank links below to compare the real prices right now. Tiny gaps are closed quickly by traders. For less popular stocks, choose the exchange with more volume, because it is easier to buy and sell there.
