9.8Why can mid-cap companies grow faster?

1What is it?

Mid caps are often in the sweet spot: proven business models, but still small enough to double or triple in size.

2Why does it exist?

It is easier to grow from ₹50,000 crore to ₹1 lakh crore than from ₹15 lakh crore to ₹30 lakh crore. Growing into a large cap also attracts more institutional buyers, pushing the price up.

3Real-life example

A popular city restaurant chain with 50 outlets can open 50 more far more easily than a national chain with 5,000 outlets can open another 5,000.

4Risks
  • Growth is not guaranteed; many mid caps fall back to small caps.
  • Valuations of mid caps can become very expensive in bull markets.
5Quick revision
  • Proven but still small enough to multiply.
  • Re-rating when they become large caps.
