3.22What is a lot size?
Time-sensitive: Nifty lot size of 65 is from the January 2026 series (NSE circular); check NSE contract specifications for the current value. Rules and rates change, so check the official source before acting.
1What is it?
A lot size is the fixed minimum number of units you must trade in certain products, such as futures and options and IPO applications.
2Why does it exist?
Standard lots keep contracts uniform and easy to trade. In normal cash-market shares, there is no lot size: you can buy even 1 share.
3Stock market example
In an IPO, one lot might be 30 shares at ₹500 = ₹15,000; you must apply in multiples of 30. In F&O, exchanges set lot sizes and revise them periodically. For example, the Nifty contract lot was cut from 75 to 65 from the January 2026 series.
4Quick revision
- Lot size = fixed unit for F&O and IPOs.
- Not needed for buying regular shares.
- Exchanges revise F&O lots periodically.
